Octopus is a marine life famous for its eight tentacles used to move and look for prey under the sea. Octopuses fall into the category of soft-bodied animals and the animal's legs are located on the head. Although quite famous, the facts about octopuses are still not widely known. One of them is the fact that octopuses have three hearts.
There are 289 identified species of octopus. Most live on the seafloor. But some, such as the paper nautilus octopus, live closer to the surface. Octopuses like to prey on other marine animals such as shrimp crabs and mollusks.
Octopuses have ink that is capable of injuring their enemies because it contains a compound called tyrosinase. When sprayed into the eyes of predators tyrosinase causes irritation that can blind and also damage the sense of smell. The compounds contained in the ink are so sadistic that octopuses that do not escape their ink can also die.
Octopuses tend to prefer solitude. Some octopus species hunt individually at night. Others only hunt at dusk and dawn. Octopuses are among the most intelligent animals on the planet. The octopus's arms are lined with hundreds of suckers that can move independently. This is because the octopus's arms have a complex collection of neurons that act as a brain. These arms also cause the octopus to be able to touch smell and manipulate objects.
